Resettlement

Our goal at York Academy & College Canada International Student Program is to enable our international students to discover and develop the ability to enhance their advanced learning in a new culture embracing of their heritage and thereby enriching the whole student body by diversity of their experiences.

• We understand and are very conscious of the cultural differences and challenges that individual international student may face upon their arrivals in Canada. However, our progressive and welcoming learning environment outweigh any potential difficulty and challenges.
• Our resettlement process focuses on the needs of each individual international student and families in the areas of housing/accommodation, language, communication, education, cultural and social integration and inclusion, work experience, etc.. Our resettlement process is effective, time efficiency, and culturally sensitive. York Academy & College Canada offers international students full and ongoing support in order to facilitate an easy transition.
• After careful assessment, York Academy & College Canada will determine the level of support programs each student requires. These support programs should be viewed as opportunities to build on skills, social, cultural and/or emotional support in the process to becoming proficient in their achievements. It is our aim to enable students to be competent and to help them achieve the academic goals to which they aspire.
• International students will be placed into an ESL program based on their English level upon arriving at York Academy & College Canada. Extra support and instruction will be given to all International ESL students in order to improve reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students who are placed into an ESL course will be eligible to use that course as a part of their Secondary School Diploma requirements.
• Students will also be given additional support for their regular course work, including assignment editing and one-on-one assistance. Guidance and Resource staff at York Academy & College Canada will also provide cultural lessons, emotional and educational counselling when needed, and assistance for applying to Universities or College in Canada or abroad.
• York Academy & College Canada does not limit its support programs to academics. To assist both international students and their parents, we offer a wide range of support programs such as immigration, insurance, transportation, emotional, accommodation, conflict resolution, cultural, social, and medical when and as needed.

As a first point of contact, York Academy & College Canada offers a wide range of continued support intended to facilitate an easy transition for international students and the parents.

Homestay: As mean of stronger cultural integration and inclusion, as well as social exchanges and immersion into Canada’s cultural mosaic makeup, York Academy & College Canada is not a boarding school. As an extension to its caring and supportive commitment, York Academy & College Canada provides and accommodates Homestay as a mean to provide friendly, unconditional caring, and supportive Canadian host family based setting environment to our international students. Let’s assure that all Canadian host families are part of York Academy & College Canada’s personnel and they are fully qualified and experienced to meet the need of each international student, including cultural needs. If a student so desires, York Academy & College Canada will strive to accommodate a Homestay Canadian family who can speak the student’s first language. • Safety: For adolescent international students at York Academy & College Canada, Homestay is the utmost, safest and supervised accommodation that we support and recommend.
• English Language Improvement: Our Homestay provides supportive daily opportunities for international students to improve their English and communication skills, while students who live in school residences usually prefer to interact with students who speak their native language; thus, they do not have the same opportunity to improve their English skills.

Airport Pick Up: Upon arrival in Calgary, York Academy & College Canada personnel along with the Homestay host family will pick international students up at the airport.

Banking, Social Insurance and Medical Insurance: Within the first two working business days of arrival in Canada, arrangements will be made for new international students to set up their first bank account in Canada. York Academy & College Canada we will also assist students applying for their social insurance cards and arrange for their purchase of medical and travel insurance coverage.

Travel and Visa Services: York Academy & College Canada provides students and their parents with travel services, including Study Visa/Permit, Visit Visa/Permit application, flight booking, hotel booking, tour booking and confirmation.

Medical Services: York Academy & College Canada has first-aid services directly on campus. If a student needs to see a doctor in an emergency, our dedicated emergency staff will ensure that the student is taken to the nearest hospital/clinic and make sure he/she is well looked after.
