Overview

York Academy & College Primary School provides a strong foundation of concepts and skills to form lifelong habits of learning throughout children’s earliest school years, in the core academic areas such as reading, writing, social studies, science, technology, robotic, engineering, architecture, mathematics, fine arts, performing arts, languages, communication, media production and broadcasting, music, physical education, and good citizenship. In all of our curricular areas, concepts are introduced at the concrete level and become more complex and detailed as the student’s knowledge and reasoning abilities advance. York Academy & College Primary School’s faculty and adjunct professionals provide dynamic, innovative and differentiated lesson plans and instructions through hands-on activities, role plays, simulations, cultural and social immersion, service learning, and multimedia projects to meet the needs of all students. Our Primary School is complemented by learning specialists with the mandate to meet the needs of every child.

York Academy "one cost cover all" takes into account the quality of education offered, the expertise of our faculty staff and paraprofessionals, and our mandatory advanced curriculum. In reality, York Academy is less expensive in many ways due to our services and programs being bundled together; this decreases commute time and saves time for parents, who traditionally are obliged to leave work early, driving to numerous destinations for after school, evening, and weekend programs and activities for their children.

Throughout the Primary School years, York Academy & College Primary School works closely with every student to provide a full support network as they are progressively adjusting to enter Middle School. Group workshops, activities, role-plays, and study-time model are implemented on a regular basis; student-parent-teacher involvements are also introduced to support and discuss transition. Our Middle School students also play a major role in helping our Primary School students in their transition.

Core Skills

Beginning in Grade 1 to the end of their Primary School, students learn the importance of good citizenship quality and its purpose, the preservation of the environment as well as the responsibility for their own behavior. Through guided practice students work to develop skills of belonging, collaboration, inter-dependence, mastery, independence, generosity, leadership, and the fundamentals for continuing lifelong learning curiosity and work ethic. The social, cultural, unconditional caring and emotional well-being of our students are fundamental in our focus and are fostered through skillful community building behaviors modeled and explicitly taught by our passion-driven, qualified faculty and adjunct professionals. Mixed grade level is often introduced in order to extend students’ learning experience and curiosity.

York Academy & College Primary School signifies the importance of promoting the development of social skills and the values of respect and responsibility for ourselves, for others, and for the environment. Echoing York Academy & College’s mandate, our Primary School curriculum covers Academics, Languages and Communication, STREAM [sciences, technology, robotic, engineering, architecture, and mathematics], Physical Education [Sports and Athletics] Fine and performing Arts, Broadcasting, Cultural and Social Immersion, Ecoliteracy, Social Emotional, Service Learning and Good Citizenship Quality, Global Learning Education and Financial Literacy.

In Primary School, students also begin Global Learning Education curriculum with the study of people, countries and cultures around the world in literature, social studies, and science. Their global studies are incorporated into their Fine and Performing Arts curricular activities.
